Weekly Round Up April 22
Another action-packed weekend for Salthill Devon across all age groups! From league titles to cup victories, our teams showed great character and skill. Here’s a roundup of the weekend’s highlights.
Women’s Team Crowned Premier League Champions!
Women’s team won the premier league today with a game to go. Shane Fitzgerald and Aoife Lynas’s team proved to be the most consistent this season in the league. A 2-0 victory over Athenry today sealed the deal!
U16 Girls B Team Keep Title Challenge Alive with 2-0 Win!
U16B girls had a 2-0 win away to St Bernard’s, which keeps them joint top with three games to play!
U15 Boys Advance to Division 3 Cup with 1-0 Victory Over Renmore!
Knockout football is where every player wants to be, and the lads were in a tense battle with Renmore from start to finish. With only a point separating the teams in the league, we knew this game would come down to the smallest of margins. The first half was very cagey, with both sides creating chances and both goalkeepers doing excellent work. At half-time, the focus was on winning more primary possession. That brought a lot more pressure in the second half, with several half chances created. Robert Matei won a penalty but it was well saved. The boys kept pressing, however, and eventually wore Renmore down. A few positional changes helped, with Liam Egan moving into midfield and driving forward with real purpose. Liam then took his chance well to get the crucial score. From there, the lads managed the game right through to the final whistle. Next up is table-toppers Bearna in Division 3. These boys are a classy group of lads who have turned up every time!
U14 Girls Teams Shine with Double Victory!
Well done to both our girls U14 teams today for their fantastic performances. They are all doing so well this season. Fair play to them. Division 2 team played a very tricky Corrib Rangers side in NFP Park and managed to grab the points with a very polished team performance and goals from Elise Kelly, Alice Dempsey, Aoife Walsh and Teaghan Grant (4-1). The Premier Division team put in an outstanding performance v Bearna FC who just kept Salthill going until the very end but they managed to grind it out with superb help from defence and midfield and with goals from Roisin McNeill, Sarah O’Connell and Saoirse Ginty (3-1)!
U13 Girls Represent Galway Town in Cup Semi-Final Victory!
Aoife and Rachael represented Galway Town in the Cup semi-final at EDP today – 5-1 win against South Belfast!
U13 Boys C Team Continue Unbeaten Home Streak with 4-2 Win!
A hard fought 4-2 win against Oughterard tonight in Drom by the U13C boys. Went 2 nil up and but for their keeper we should have been out of sight at HT. A handball penalty had them back at 2-1 against the run of play and we ended the half 3-1 up. We were cruising so made lots of subs to get game time for the lads but it let them back in with about 10mins to go. Finished strong at the end and put it beyond Oughterard with a 4th goal with 3 mins to go. Another win to continue the unbeaten home streak, up to 3rd in the league with a PLUS 1 goal difference. Final game of the season against Knocknacarra in Drom on Saturday!
U12 Girls B Team Win League Unbeaten!
GU12B win the league unbeaten! Final game today beating Barna 3-2!
U12 Boys E Team Crowned Division 5 Champions!
U12Es won division 5 tonight with a win over Corofin. Great group of lads with a cup final still to play!
Réidín O’Driscoll Represents Galway Maroons in Trophy Semi-Final!
1-0 win for Galway Maroons in trophy semi-final in Eamonn Deacy Park. Réidín O’Driscoll represented Salthill Devon!
U10 Navy Squad Finish Development League in Strong Form!
SDFC under 10 Navy squad finished the development league very strongly today against a strong Cregmore team. The lads had a super season. POTM today was Joe Mulkerrins and a name to keep out for, Fionn Purcell, who kept up his scoring record with 4 more today. Business end comes now with the upcoming tournaments!
U14 Boys Reach Connacht Cup Final with 2-0 Semi-Final Victory!
U14 are through to the final of the Connacht Cup with a 2-0 victory over Mervue Utd, Thomas Houlihan and Sebi Todosi with the goals on the day!
