Salthill Devon Allocated Sports Capital Grant

Sep 30, 2024

Salthill Devon have been allocated €221,481 in the most recent round of funding allocations announced today by The Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin T.D., and the Minister of State for Sport, Physical Education and the Gaeltacht, Thomas Byrne T.D.

Designated as a Regional Centre by the FAI, Salthill Devon’s application had as its primary objective the replacement of existing floodlights with LED lights and the installation of solar panels, improved energy efficient laundry and other elements all geared towards making the Drom soccer park a more energy efficient campus and furthering the sustainability agenda the Club has set for the future development of the site.

Salthill Devon chairman Oliver Daniels said: “This is a significant investment and enables us to take the next steps in the plans to make Drom a sustainable and carbon neutral facility. I want to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supported our application, your belief in what we do and your ongoing support is vital.

“We look forward to working with officials from the department to progress the works covered under this grant. These works are an integral part our vision to make Drom a sustainable and energy efficient hub that is at the heart of our community.
This is a busy time for everyone in the Salthill Devon community as we aim to deliver on our vision for grassroots football in Galway.”

We are extremely grateful for this allocation and it will go towards the continuing improvement works at Drom. We are justifiably proud of what we have achieved to date, but given the ongoing growth and ever increasing demand for expanded facilities, it is vital that this allocation is viewed as just another phase in the ongoing investment that is required. The club would like to thank the FAI for our regional designation and to our local representatives for supporting out application. We see this as an endorsement of what we are doing and a vote of confidence in our future plans.

As mentioned, this grant allocation will allow the Club to build on what has already been achieved and further enhance the long-term viability of the facility. Over the past 23 years the club has invested some € 7.75million in the development of the campus at Drom – over € 5million of this has come from its own funds raised though fund raising, bank borrowings and generous support from members and benefactors with the balance being provided through a series of Sports Capital grants and assistance from Galway City Council which have helped to fund the various incremental stages of the development.

Recently in Drom Salthill Devon hosted the then Minister for Finance Michael McGrath ina visit organised by Mayor of Galway Peter Kelne and also attended at the time by the Mayor at the time Eddie Hoare
